  2. Multicom Technical Note                 MPC

  4. This document provides a guide to setting
  5. up MIDI Mapper in Windows so that music and
  6. sound are correctly produced in a Multicom
  7. title.
  8.  
  9. Problem: Music or Sound does not play
  10. -------
  11. Solution: Create a New Setup for MIDI Mapper
  12. --------
  13. Procedure:
  14. ---------
  15.  1. Locate the MIDI Mapper contrfol panel. It is located in the Control
  16.     Panel program item of your Windows Main Group.
  17.  
  18.  2. Note the setting that is currently being used (write down the name
  19.     that appears in the "Name" field of the MIDI Mapper control panel).
  20.     You will want toknow what the original setup was in case sound does
  21.     not play correctly in other programs. It may be necessary to change
  22.     the setup depending on the program being used.
  23.  
  24.  3. Create a new setup by selecting the "New" button located at the
  25.     bottom of the MIDI Mapper window.
  26.  
  27.  4. Enter the name of the new group. For easy reference the name of the
  28.     title (i.e. CookBook or Multicim) can be used. It is not necessary
  29.     to enter in a description.
  30.  
  31.  5. Press "OK". You will be presented with a spreadsheet like Window.
  32.  
  33.  6. The only area of this wibndow that we are concerned with is the
  34.     "Port Name" column. All other areas should remain untouched.
  35.  
  36.  7. Select the first box directly under the "Port Name" column heading.
  37.     Click on the arroe that appears on the right of the box. A drop
  38.     down menu with sevceral optrions should appear. These options will
  39.     vary depending on the sound card installed in your computer. For
  40.     Sound Blaster - 16 there should be options for [Voyetra Super SAPI
  41.     FM Drive], [SB-16 MIDI Out] and [none].
  42.  
  43.     In order for the sound to play correctly on a SoundBlaster Card,
  44.     channels 1 through 12 must have SB MIDI out selected for the "Port-
  45.     Name". Channels 13 through 16 should have the Voetra FM setting.
  46.  
  47.     *Note: Other sound cards may only have the option for a MIDI
  48.     Synthesizer. For these cards set all the channels to use the MIDI
  49.     option that is present.

  51.  8. After setting up the new group, press "OK" and save the settings.
  52.  
  53.  9. Close the MIDI Mapper Control Panel. You are now ready to run the
  54.     Multicom title.
  55.  
  56.     *Note: It is not necessary to Exit Windows or re-boot your computer
  57.     for the changes to take effect.
  58.  
  59. 10. When running the Multicom title and error message may appear stating
  60.     that `sound may not play correctly using the current MIDI setup.'
  61.     Ignore the message and see if music plays. In the CookBook title
  62.     music plays during the instruction of the program. In Nationa Parks
  63.     title music is available when viewing slides. If music is playing
  64.     correctly then you may choose not to display the error message in
  65.     the future by checking the appropriate box when the error message
  66.     is displayed.
